Phu My Hung a model for new urban areas: ministry
(Listed Jun 27, 2008)
Phu My Hung, an urban development on Ho Chi Minh City’s outskirts, is Vietnam’s “new urban area model” to which future developments should aspire, said the Minister of Construction at a seminar Thursday.

The 484.2 hectare Phu My Hung, located in District 7 at the southern end of the city, will have the title for a period of five years.

“Phu My Hung deserves the title,” said Minister Nguyen Hong Quan at the urban area seminar held in HCMC by the Ministry of Construction, the HCMC People’s Committee and the Association of Cities of Vietnam.

“Phu My Hung is environmentally friendly and exhibits harmonious architecture,” he said.

“The granting of such a title will also encourage other urban areas to compete for it in the future.”

Quan also hailed the construction of Nguyen Van Linh Boulevard for being built without government funds.

The road has helped to boost much development in the area.

The boulevard runs through Phu My Hung New Urban Area and connects the southern part of the city to National Highway 1A.

Seminar participants also praised the Phu My Hung Corporation, which helped transform the former wetland area in into a modern city.

Phu My Hung employs 600 maintenance workers for the area and 400 security personnel.

“It’s a good example of the importance of good management after construction,” said Le Van Nam, the former chief city architect.

“The local government should set more regulations for investors after construction.”
The Ministry of Construction also said it would suggest new criteria for new urban areas in the coming draft of Law of Construction Planning.

Vietnam has 288 new urban areas, including those under construction.

Statistics show an increase of 58 million sq. meters of housing annually over the past few years, in which HCMC accounts 6.5 million sq. meters.
